Rachel from Accounts has apparently discovered a black hole!
Well, Rachel, here are some suggestions to fill it!
- Shut down DESNZ – Saving £14.0bn (incl Capital Spend) – the Department serves no useful purpose.
- End subsidies for heat pumps – Saving £2.2bn, the potential cost if govt targets of 300,000 a year are met
- Levelise car taxes for EVs – currently EV drivers do not pay fuel duty. Instead they should pay extra vehicle tax of £1000 – Saving £1.3bn
- Abolish all climate aid – Saving £11.6bn over five years, or £2.3bn a year
TOTAL SAVING – £19.8bn a year
All of these savings could be made with little more than a stroke of the pen. None would involve any changes to existing laws, or involve breach of contract.
And they would all have the benefit of fairness and equity. After all, why should some motorists subsidise others with EVs. Why should I subsidise my next-door neighbour’s heat pump?
Go on, Rachel! Make a name for yourself, before you get sucked into that black hole!
